LET’S MAKE IT
Step by step
- 01
Heat vegetable oil in a heavy Dutch oven over medium-high heat.
- 02
Season beef with salt and black pepper, then brown in batches until deeply seared, about 6 minutes total, and set aside.
- 03
Add diced onions, garlic, and ginger to the pot; cook over medium heat for 5 minutes until soft and fragrant.
- 04
Stir in ground coriander and ground cumin, cooking for 1 minute to bloom the spices in the oil.
- 05
Return beef to the pot, add beef broth, cover with a lid, and simmer on low heat for 45 minutes until beef begins to soften.
- 06
Add green beans and diced potatoes to the pot, press them down into the braising liquid, cover, and simmer for another 25 minutes until tender.
- 07
Uncover and gently mash a few potato cubes against the side of the pot to naturally thicken the rich gravy before serving hot.
A LITTLE KITCHEN KNOW-HOW
Bredie Braising
Slow-cooking tough cuts of meat alongside watery vegetables so the dish cooks down naturally into a rich, sweet, and concentrated gravy.
Notes from the kitchen
- Green bean bredie relies on the water released from the vegetables as they break down, so avoid adding extra liquid unless necessary.
- Serve with white basmati rice and a side of savory fruit chutney for traditional flavor.
- Original home-cooking adaptation inspired by South African; regional versions vary.
- Use halal-certified meat, poultry, stock, sauces, cheese and other processed ingredients. Check labels and avoid cross-contamination. Recipe screening is not halal certification.
