LET’S MAKE IT

Step by step

  1. 01

Place chopped potatoes into a medium pot of salted water. Bring to a boil over high heat and cook for 15 minutes until fork-tender. Drain and return to pot.

  2. 02

Mash potatoes thoroughly with warm milk and unsalted butter until smooth. Season with a pinch of salt to taste and set aside.

  3. 03

Heat macadamia nut oil in an oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and cook for 6 to 8 minutes, breaking it into small crumbles, until browned. Drain excess fat if necessary.

  4. 04

Add finely chopped onion and diced carrots to the beef skillet. Cook for 5 minutes until vegetables soften.

  5. 05

Dissolve yeast extract spread into warm halal beef broth. Pour into skillet along with green peas, stirring well to combine. Simmer for 5 minutes until mixture thickens slightly.

  6. 06

Preheat oven broiler to high. Spread mashed potatoes evenly over the beef filling in the skillet. Use a fork to create ridges on top.

  7. 07

Place skillet under the broiler for 4 to 5 minutes until the potato peaks turn golden brown and crisp. Cool for 5 minutes before serving.

A LITTLE KITCHEN KNOW-HOW

Skillet pie finishing under broiler

Assembling filling and potato topping in a single oven-safe pan, then broiling to brown the top layer efficiently.

Notes from the kitchen

  • Adding yeast extract gives the beef gravy a deep savory umami finish typical of traditional Australian savory pies.
  • Rake the surface of the mash with fork tines to create texture for extra crispiness under the broiler.
  • Original home-cooking adaptation inspired by Australian; regional versions vary.
  • Use halal-certified meat, poultry, stock, sauces, cheese and other processed ingredients. Check labels and avoid cross-contamination. Recipe screening is not halal certification.
