LET’S MAKE IT
Step by step
- 01
Heat olive oil in a wide skillet over medium-high heat.
- 02
Add diced yellow onion, red bell pepper, and chopped scallions, sautéing for 4 minutes until softened.
- 03
Add halal ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, and cook for 6 minutes until browned through.
- 04
Stir in ground allspice, fresh thyme leaves, salt, and black pepper, cooking for 2 minutes to release aromatics.
- 05
Gently fold in the drained canned ackee pieces, taking care not to break or crush the delicate fruit.
- 06
Cover the skillet and simmer on low heat for 5 minutes until the ackee is heated through, then serve immediately.
A LITTLE KITCHEN KNOW-HOW
Gentle Folding of Delicate Ingredients
Using a wide spatula to carefully turn fragile ingredients into a cooked meat mixture without crushing their structure.
Notes from the kitchen
- Ackee fruit is extremely delicate, so fold it in very gently at the very end of cooking.
- Ensure ground beef is well browned and drained of excess liquid before adding spices.
- Original home-cooking adaptation inspired by Jamaican; regional versions vary.
- Use halal-certified meat, poultry, stock, sauces, cheese and other processed ingredients. Check labels and avoid cross-contamination. Recipe screening is not halal certification.
