LET’S MAKE IT

Step by step

  1. 01

Submerge peeled yam cubes in cold water for 5 minutes to clean, then drain.

  2. 02

In a medium soup pot, combine chopped yellow onion, minced scotch bonnet, pepper soup spice blend, and fish broth.

  3. 03

Bring the broth mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.

  4. 04

Add drained yam cubes to the boiling broth, cover pot with lid, reduce heat to medium, and simmer for 15 minutes until yam is tender.

  5. 05

Add smoked trout pieces into the pot with the yam.

  6. 06

Season with salt, stir gently to keep yam cubes whole, and simmer uncovered for 8 minutes until fish is warmed.

  7. 07

Stir in fresh basil leaves, remove pot from heat, cover for 2 minutes, and serve hot in wide bowls.

A LITTLE KITCHEN KNOW-HOW

Starch-Infused Broth Reduction

Simmering starchy roots directly in spicy broth releases natural starches that lightly thicken and body the soup body organically.

Notes from the kitchen

  • If African yam is unavailable, thick-cut sweet yellow potatoes or russet potatoes make an effective alternative.
  • Avoid over-stirring once fish is added to prevent fish chunks from disintegrating in the broth.
  • Original home-cooking adaptation inspired by Nigerian; regional versions vary.
  • Use halal-certified meat, poultry, stock, sauces, cheese and other processed ingredients. Check labels and avoid cross-contamination. Recipe screening is not halal certification.
