Sri Lankan Spiced Tuna Coconut Mallung

LET’S MAKE IT

Step by step

  1. 01

In a mixing bowl, combine grated coconut, diced red onion, sliced green chilies, turmeric powder, chopped curry leaves, and salt.

  2. 02

Use clean hands or a spoon to crush and rub the coconut mixture together so the flavors meld.

  3. 03

Heat coconut oil in a wide skillet over medium heat.

  4. 04

Add the grated coconut mixture to the skillet and warm for 2 minutes, stirring continuously.

  5. 05

Add the drained flaked tuna to the skillet and gently stir-fold with coconut mixture.

  6. 06

Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until the tuna is fully heated through and moisture evaporates slightly into a fluffy dry dish.

  7. 07

Remove skillet from heat, drizzle fresh lime juice over the warm mallung, toss gently, and serve.

A LITTLE KITCHEN KNOW-HOW

Warm Coconut Sambal Stirring (Mallung)

Blending grated coconut with ground aromatics and lightly steaming/tossing over pan heat until soft, fragrant, and fluffy.

Notes from the kitchen

  • Mallung is traditionally dry; do not cover the pan while warming to prevent moisture buildup.
  • Adjust green chilies to control heat level according to preference.
  • Original home-cooking adaptation inspired by Sri Lankan; regional versions vary.
  • Use halal-certified meat, poultry, stock, sauces, cheese and other processed ingredients. Check labels and avoid cross-contamination. Recipe screening is not halal certification.
