LET’S MAKE IT
Step by step
- 01
In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, minced onion, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, dried thyme, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper.
- 02
Form beef mixture into 8 compact oval patties, roughly 1 inch thick.
- 03
Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a skillet over medium-high heat and cook patties for 4 minutes per side until browned; transfer patties to a plate.
- 04
Add remaining butter and sliced mushrooms to the skillet, cooking for 5 minutes until browned and softened.
- 05
Pour in halal beef broth, bring gravy to a simmer, and scrape up cooked drippings from pan bottom.
- 06
Place frikadellen back into skillet gravy and simmer for 4 minutes until patties reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).
A LITTLE KITCHEN KNOW-HOW
Pan Gravy Reduction
Simmering pan juices and broth after searing meats to create a concentrated, naturally flavorful sauce.
Notes from the kitchen
- Mince onions as finely as possible so patties hold shape without breaking during frying.
- Allow breadcrumbs to hydrate in egg mixture for 2 minutes before forming patties.
- Original home-cooking adaptation inspired by German; regional versions vary.
- Use halal-certified meat, poultry, stock, sauces, cheese and other processed ingredients. Check labels and avoid cross-contamination. Recipe screening is not halal certification.
