LET’S MAKE IT

Step by step

  1. 01

Whisk soy sauce, dark brown sugar, red pepper flakes, and garlic powder in a medium bowl to form a marinade.

  2. 02

Toss sliced beef flank steak in the marinade, pressing to coat thoroughly, and let sit at room temperature for 15 minutes.

  3. 03

Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large cast-iron skillet over high heat until shimmering.

  4. 04

Add sweet onion wedges and sear for 4 minutes until edges are charred yet crisp, then remove onions and set aside.

  5. 05

Add remaining oil to the hot skillet and lay beef strips in a single layer without overcrowding.

  6. 06

Sear beef untouched for 2 minutes, then flip and cook for another 2 minutes until caramelized and cooked through.

  7. 07

Return onions to the skillet, sprinkle coarse sea salt over top, and toss everything together for 1 minute.

  8. 08

Remove from heat, garnish with sliced green onions, and serve immediately over warm rice.

A LITTLE KITCHEN KNOW-HOW

High-Heat Pan-Searing

Cooking meat rapidly at elevated temperatures to develop a flavorful brown crust while keeping the interior juicy.

Notes from the kitchen

  • Ensure the skillet is piping hot before adding beef to achieve authentic charred edges.
  • Slice the flank steak against the grain for maximum tenderness.
  • Original home-cooking adaptation inspired by Hawaiian; regional versions vary.
  • Use halal-certified meat, poultry, stock, sauces, cheese and other processed ingredients. Check labels and avoid cross-contamination. Recipe screening is not halal certification.
