LET’S MAKE IT

Step by step

  1. 01

Heat a tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large Dutch oven over medium heat, add the diced yellow onion, and cook for 5 minutes until translucent.

  2. 02

Stir in the smoked paprika and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant to bloom the spice in oil.

  3. 03

Pour in the crushed tomatoes and halal beef broth, scraping the bottom of the pot to lift any brown bits.

  4. 04

Add the shredded halal beef, sweet corn kernels, lima beans, brown sugar, and apple vinegar. Stir well to combine.

  5. 05

Bring the mixture to a simmer, reduce the heat to low, cover, and let simmer for 20 minutes to allow the flavors to blend.

  6. 06

Uncover the pot and cook for another 10 minutes until the stew thickens to your desired consistency. Serve hot.

A LITTLE KITCHEN KNOW-HOW

Simmering

Cooking liquids just below the boiling point over low heat to break down tough fibers and blend complex flavors into a cohesive sauce.

Notes from the kitchen

  • Using pre-cooked shredded halal roast beef saves time without sacrificing classic barbecue stew flavor.
  • Adjust the apple vinegar at the end if you prefer a sharper, more Carolina-style tang.
  • Original home-cooking adaptation inspired by American Southern; regional versions vary.
  • Use halal-certified meat, poultry, stock, sauces, cheese and other processed ingredients. Check labels and avoid cross-contamination. Recipe screening is not halal certification.
