LET’S MAKE IT

Step by step

  1. 01

Divide ground halal beef into 4 equal portions and form into 3/4-inch thick patties, seasoning generously with salt and pepper.

  2. 02

Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat and sear patties for 4 minutes per side until deeply browned, then transfer to a plate.

  3. 03

Add remaining olive oil, sliced yellow onion, and cremini mushrooms to skillet, sautéing over medium heat for 7 minutes until softened and translucent.

  4. 04

Whisk cornstarch, halal beef stock, soy sauce, and alcohol-free worcestershire sauce together until smooth.

  5. 05

Pour stock mixture into skillet, bringing to a simmer while stirring continuously until gravy thickens into a glossy finish.

  6. 06

Return beef patties to gravy and simmer for 2 minutes to heat through.

  7. 07

Fry eggs sunny-side up in a separate nonstick pan until whites are set and yolks remain runny.

  8. 08

Place each beef patty over cooked white rice, spoon rich gravy and onions over top, and crown with a fried egg.

A LITTLE KITCHEN KNOW-HOW

Pan Gravy Emulsification

Combining fond and cooked aromatics with a starch-slurry stock mixture to build a velvety sauce directly in the cooking skillet.

Notes from the kitchen

  • Do not press down on beef patties while cooking to keep juices intact.
  • Ensure egg yolk remains runny so it mixes into gravy upon eating.
  • Original home-cooking adaptation inspired by Hawaiian; regional versions vary.
  • Use halal-certified meat, poultry, stock, sauces, cheese and other processed ingredients. Check labels and avoid cross-contamination. Recipe screening is not halal certification.
