LET’S MAKE IT
Step by step
- 01
Press tofu slices lightly with paper towels to absorb excess moisture, then coat both sides with sesame seeds.
- 02
In a small bowl, stir together halal soy sauce, maple syrup, and toasted sesame oil.
- 03
Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- 04
Add sesame-coated tofu slices and pan-fry for 3 to 4 minutes per side until crisp and golden brown; remove from pan.
- 05
Add sliced shiitake mushrooms to the same hot pan and sauté for 3 minutes until tender and browned.
- 06
Pour half of the soy-maple mixture over the mushrooms, tossing for 1 minute until glazed.
- 07
Arrange crispy tofu and glazed shiitake mushrooms over warm rice, drizzle remaining sauce over top, and garnish with chopped green onions.
A LITTLE KITCHEN KNOW-HOW
Seed Crusting
Pressing dry tofu directly into toasted seeds forms an aromatic, crunchy protective crust during pan-searing.
Notes from the kitchen
- Thoroughly pressing moisture out of tofu ensures sesame seeds adhere better and crisps up evenly.
- Shiitake mushrooms act like sponges; sautéing them before adding liquid browns them deeply for rich earthy flavor.
- Original home-cooking adaptation inspired by Japanese; regional versions vary.
- Use halal-certified meat, poultry, stock, sauces, cheese and other processed ingredients. Check labels and avoid cross-contamination. Recipe screening is not halal certification.
